My experiences with rogers

In 2005, it was revealed that Rogers engages in packet shaping. Now, I m well aware that some applications, if not configured properly, can cause major problems on a network, and so they need to be controlled. I m mainly thinking of peer-to-peer applications used by people who don t know how to properly configure their programs. I run a small network, and myself and all of my users are painfully aware of the consequences of a poorly-configured peer-to-peer application on the network. I m OK with a small amount of control over peer-to-peer traffic for this reason. Rogers, however, has gone more than a few steps beyond what is justifiable for network performance. Of course, I m assuming here that Rogers actually has the capability to provide every customer with exactly what their advertised rates are. However, it seems not even their technical support staff are aware of the traffic shaping in effect, or they re lying to customers. I called in multiple times about this, and one person denied that Rogers uses packet shaping and further said they never would. Two others say that Rogers does indeed use packet shaping. One person described the effects as hardly noticeable except for illegal traffic, while the other said the effects were up to a 40% reduction for all encrypted or high-port traffic. I m sorry, last time I checked, I was paying for Internet access at up to the advertised rates, not pointlessly and arbitrarily degraded Internet access.

What's worse, they are t years, the traffic status of the network performance only, in particular causing problems - they just come back the dignity that each inbound port for each encrypted traffic! That is when two men removed from flight for speaking Arabic possibility. Extreme example? Perhaps, but there are similarities. In the trial, passengers could be removed because they speak in a language that is native language of terrorists. In this case, the user traffic is worse because they can use a protocol that is used for software pirates. Now, what I do not really get how they can not distinguish between off-standard SSH port traffic is encrypted and traffic. SSH package has, among other things, string SSH. It's not hard to know, is right at the beginning s payload, and s is used for SSH fingerprint for traffic. All the equipment and traffic shaping commercial grade firewall I m understanding is the ability to investigate selective SSH traffic to pray or ask for legislative foundation that identification.

According to emails and telephone conversations with Rogers technical support, is the only one of their programs but also the craftsmen who they do not know the difference between peer-to-peer traffic and other traffic. The first letter I sent them asking about rural encrypted login protocols, and the answer I received was to talk about peer-to-peer downloading. Don t also understand the difference between the BitTorrent protocol and the BitTorrent client applications, because they talk about the application BitTorrent. Basically, they do not try to fix the problem, I really do, and when I called him and he talked about the many issues raised by their answer technical support phone and email, next email said I was only given to Rogers and Rogers' End user agreement acceptable Use Policy (PDF). Or say anything about the formation of this traffic in any way (at least they did not so when I downloaded them), although acceptable use policy would say that there are no servers are allowed.

Which prohibits any peer-to-peer client, and SSH server I run that started all this. Interestingly enough, using the Video Conference Webcam or features of MSN client also violates this policy, because they begin to connect the server directly where possible, with alternatives if it fails to direct server connection. I believe they do one thing for users to dialogue and direct, but I m sure about that. Other IM services may also violate the AUP is the same way or similar. And of course, they recommend to fill the forms of service to their clients if I have more questions or problems, and that I should write a letter to the Office of the President, if I'm not satisfied with their services. Satisfied be one way to say it. Not satisfied with anger at the inability Rogers technical support and technical support manager will be a bit more accurate.

Not only must the people who care about the concerns and the ability to use a good Internet connection (and the law applicable to them), it also should concern a network neutrality advocates. Rogers was able to decide what traffic within their own networks, and they've got aggressive ve apply traffic shaping. All that remains is to apply the rule that traffic outside the source / destination has a maximum speed of X. At least the University of Ottawa has been a complaint from the users who can not correctly use a petition from the house. Interestingly enough, Rogers users will only have a complaint. Was won t stop there, however. All traffic is encrypted destruction, any businesses that rely on VPN technology for rural users will get the workers themselves and connect failure (or willing to deal with a small dial-up broadband speeds) if the user (or the company itself) is using Rogers.

Michael Geist showed a lack of transparency and the threat to communications, but also shows something more disturbing. Since April 17, 2007, no civil authority, and the Minister of Industry Maxime Bernier Mr., Commissioner of Competition Sheridan Scott, Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Chair Konrad von Finckenstein, has made an effort to end. Bernier has really should do the opposite - despite constraints of the parliamentary committee studying the deregulation of communications, he pushed forward and plan to do so in early April.

I encourage anyone who cares about all the contacts with the right person. Contact information for various people can be found below. Rogers did not give the name and email address, and I could not find a phone number, so that only the address given.
